UQ Materials Engineering academic Professor Arne Dahle is to be awarded an Honorary Doctorate (Doctor Honoris Causa) from Jönköping University in Sweden.

In a statement announcing upcoming Honorary Doctorate recipients, Jönköping University said Professor Dahle would be recognised for his research on solidification of metals and for his research and education efforts in the area of casting.

Professor Dahle said he was humbled by the news.

“It is an incredible honour and privilege to receive this Honorary Doctorate,” Professor Dahle said.

“For Jönköping University to award me an Honorary Doctoral degree means that my colleagues in the academic community recognise that the work I am doing is world-class.”

Professor Dahle is a Materials Engineer with a research focus on light metals, particularly aluminium and magnesium alloys.

He has a strong association with Jönköping University, having been a Visiting Professor there since 2006.

“I have hosted a large number of students from Jönköping University here at The University of Queensland, where I have formulated and supervised their Masters thesis research.

“These projects have been very successful and have resulted in several international journal publications.”

Professor Dahle’s support of Jönköping University has included formulating funding applications for a large research centre and the delivery of various courses and seminars.

Professor Dahle has worked at UQ for 13 years and carries out research within the CAST Cooperative Research Centre and the ARC Centre of Excellence for Design in Light Metals.

Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and Information Technology Executive Dean Professor Graham Schaffer said the award recognised the strength of Professor Dahle’s work.

“Professor Dahle has a strong record of outstanding fundamental and applied research, which includes a paper on how metals deform during industrial casting processes, published in the prestigious scientific journal Nature in 2007.

“Strong collaborations with industry are another hallmark of Professor Dahle’s work,” Professor Schaffer said.

“I would like to extend my congratulations to Professor Dahle on this honour.”

Professor Dahle was also a recipient of a Faculty Teaching Award in 2009 in recognition of his popularity as a teacher and the strong academic results of his students.

Professor Dahle will receive his Doctor Honoris Causa at an awards ceremony at Jönköping University in September.
