The 2010 Architecture Public Lecture Series ASIA PACIFIC continues to wow audiences with the talents and opinions of key local and international architects.

The series of 11 talks boasts six stellar speakers from overseas in the program organised by UQ’s School of Architecture with support of the Queensland Government and the State Library of Queensland.

Convenor Andrew Wilson, from UQ's School of Architecture, said this year's public lecture series offered a broad range of approaches for those with an interest in architecture.

"The speakers talk about a range of completed projects and provide insight in to particular directions and positions they take in relation to contemporary architecture," Mr Wilson said.

"The lecture series presents some of the most highly regarded architects of the Asia Pacific region with three international talks scheduled in May and August."

On May 4, Kevin Low, owner of Malaysian architecture firm smallprojects, will come to Brisbane to discuss some of his past and present projects. His innovative firm is based in Kuala Lumpur and focuses on the architecture of garden houses. smallprojects is also renowned for the custom design of structures around houses and gardens, such as mailboxes, beds and shelves.

The speaker on May 11 is Akihisa Hirata, one of the new generation of Japanese architects to emerge from the office of world-acclaimed architect Toyo Ito. Since establishing his own practice, Akihisa Hirata Architecture Office, five years ago, he has produced a series of inventive buildings that showcase new ways of dividing space.

The series will come to an exciting climax on August 12, when Hitoshi Abe will present. Abe has offices in Sendai, Japan and Los Angeles, United States. He is famous for his spatially complex and structurally innovative designs and was awarded the 2007 World Architecture Award. Abe is also Chair of Architecture at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Admission to the public lectures is free. All lectures are open to the public and are held in Auditorium 1 at the State Library of Queensland. Refreshments are served from 6pm with the talks starting at 6.30pm.
