UQ Sport is helping to develop our future tennis stars through the MLC Hot Shots program.
More than 75 kids took over the courts at the Queensland Tennis Centre last Sunday for the latest tournament.
MLC Hot Shots, Tennis Australia’s starter tennis program for 5-12 year olds, is proving popular at the state’s premier tennis facility, with participant numbers rapidly growing with each tournament.
Hot Shots uses modified court sizes and low-compression balls to help young children learn the basics of tennis from the early stages of their development.
Sunday’s tournament at the Queensland Tennis Centre formed part of a unique "Grand Prix Circuit", a joint initiative of the Queensland Tennis Centre and the UQ Tennis Centre that provides children with an exciting home and away competition format.
Queensland Tennis Centre Head Coach, Derek Burden, labelled Sunday’s event a "huge success".
"It was great to see so many young kids out here on the weekend enjoying being part of a competition which is tailored to their developmental needs as young players," Mr Burden said.
The Hot Shots tournaments complement the other tennis activities that both tennis venues offer children throughout the year including coaching, fixtures and holiday programs. These programs are delivered by Active Tribes, a specialist provider of junior sport activities managed by UQ Sport.
