A new executive board and growing interest in the UQ Tourism Students Association has given the group the confidence to aim for a doubling of its membership by the end of the year.
The group’s membership has just hit triple figures, reaching 101 for the first time since the TSA was formed at the start of 2009.
President Reece Parsons said the strong membership growth was a good sign and inspired the executive board to come up with a host of event plans to keep students involved and interacting.
Among them was a workshop at South Bank bistro Era, with director of food Brad Hamilton speaking to TSA members about the secrets of success.
Students at the booked-out workshop will also be involved in a brainstorming session, dealing with issues such as overcoming the global economic crunch, staff retention and building customer relationships.
“This year the TSA is aiming to establish yearly events through developing relationships with tourism and hospitality operators in Brisbane,” Mr Parsons said.
“By the end of the year we hope to double membership and attract sponsorship for further TSA events.
“We had a welcome lunch for members, which had a great turnout. Other events to be announced shortly include a careers day.
“We also hope to plan a social trip for members later in the year to encourage networking among students.”
Mr Parsons said the TSA aimed to bring together students, tourism and hospitality operators and employers to establish both social and professional relationships.
“These relationships are for students to excel not only at their studies but in increasing their chances of finding employment while undertaking their degree.
“On graduation, students should find they have made contacts in areas of interest and will have a head-start in gaining employment in the field of their interest.”
Professional development, networking and work experience were the main aims when the group was formed in 2009 to benefit both undergraduate and postgraduate students.
