30 April 2010

Company law authority Professor Robert (Bob) Austin will present the TC Beirne School of Law 2010 McPherson Lecture Series in Brisbane next month.

Professor Austin is formerly a Judge of the Supreme Court of New South Wales and currently Adjunct Professor and Challis Lecturer in Corporate Law at the University of Sydney.

He will present three lectures over three consecutive evenings under the topic: The Role and Duties of Australian Company Directors: a Restatement.

The lectures will take place on 24, 25 and 26 May from 6pm-7pm at the Banco Court, Supreme Court Building, George Street, Brisbane. Refreshments will be served at the conclusion of each lecture.

Professor Austin will address three broad issues and will inject into his discussion perspectives on: the function of the corporate board; the traditional exposition of conflicts of interests and improper use of position and information; good faith and improper purposes; care and diligence; and insolvent trading.

Dean of UQ’s TC Beirne School of Law Professor Ross Grantham said the School was delighted that Professor Austin had agreed to deliver the 2010 McPherson Lecture Series.

“Professor Austin is a world authority on company law and as Australia’s leading commentator, he brings a wealth of experience to the lecture series," Professor Grantham said.

“In addition to serving as a Judge in the Equity Division of the Supreme Court of New South Wales for 12 years, Professor Austin has had a long involvement in company and financial services law reform and has also been teaching law for 41 years.”

Professor Grantham said given Professor Austin’s background and experience, this year’s McPherson Lecture Series would be of benefit not only to legal professionals but also to business and financial executives and government policy makers.

The McPherson Lecture Series is named after The Honourable Dr Bruce McPherson, who retired in 2006 from the Supreme Court of Queensland after serving 24 years on the bench. Dr McPherson is an internationally respected commercial and corporate lawyer who has been in practice for 41 years. His books are regarded internationally as leading works.

Attendance of the 2010 McPherson Lecture Series is free, but RSVP is essential. Please visit www.law.uq.edu.au/mcpherson for further information and online registration details.
