11 March 2010

Are you a budding architecture student, professional or enthusiast living in Brisbane?

Then set aside your Tuesday nights as The University of Queensland opens its 2010 Architecture Public Lecture Series ASIA PACIFIC.

With 11 free public lectures organised for Tuesday evenings from March through to August, this year’s series ASIA PACIFIC is set to showcase the talents and opinions of some leading local, national and international architects.

The first public lecture will be held by acclaimed architect Professor Rewi Thompson from 6pm on March 16.

Heralding from New Zealand’s University of Auckland, Adjunct Professor Thompson will talk about the evolution of new generation Maori architecture and a number of projects in his home country.

Convenor Andrew Wilson, from UQ’s School of Architecture, said this year’s public lecture series would offer something to everyone who has an interest in architecture.

“The architects invited will talk about a range of completed projects and will provide insight into particular directions and positions they take in relation to contemporary architecture,” Mr Wilson said.

“There’s a mixture of local, national and international speakers, so the series offers an opportunity for a comparison across a broad range of approaches being taken by architects working in the region.”

To facilitate broader public participation, the lecture series will also for the first time make its way off UQ’s St Lucia campus to the State Library of Queensland from April 20.

“Hosting the lectures at the State Library makes the series available to professionals and the broader public,” Mr Wilson said.

Sponsored by The University of Queensland (UQ), the Queensland Government and the State Library of Queensland, the public lecture series will be held on March 16, 23, 30 and April 13 at UQ’s St Lucia Campus, Room 206 Steele Building from 6pm.

On March 23, the topic is: On Paddling Your Own Canoe (Mitchell & Stout Architects, Auckland); March 30: Monolithic
(Super Colossal, Sydney) and on April 13: Impermanence (Paul Hotston, Phorm Architecture, Brisbane). The series will then move to the State Library of Queensland’s Auditorium 1 on April 20.

The series will run through until August 12, concluding with a special lecture from the 2007 World Architecture Award winner and Chair of the Department of Architecture and Urban Design at the University of California, Los Angeles, Professor Hitoshi Abe.

All lectures are open to the public and admission is free.
