The University of Queensland has recognised an eminent UQ academic for distinguished service in the field of mathematical physics.

At a recent meeting, the University's Senate conferred the title of Professor Emeritus on Professor Tony Bracken.

Those conferred an Emeritus title, with continuing status as Professors of the University, continue to play an important role within the University.

“The School is delighted that Professor Bracken has been conferred Professor Emeritus,” said Professor Halina Rubinsztein-Dunlop, Head of UQ's School of Mathematics and Physics.

“We look forward to continuing our relationship with Professor Bracken and his contribution to the area of mathematical physics.”

Professor Bracken was awarded his PhD from the University of Adelaide in 1970 and joined The University of Queensland as a Lecturer in Mathematics in 1973.

Professor Bracken’s research is in the area of mathematical physics and he has long standing research relationships with the University of Colorado, Collegium Budapest, and the International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste.

A life member of the International Association of Mathematical Physics and Fellow of the Australian Institute of Physics, Professor Bracken has an extensive grant and publication record as well as many graduated students. He has won numerous prizes and has held many visiting positions in other universities.

Professor Bracken received numerous promotions throughout his career and was appointed to a Personal Chair as Professor in 1991.

He has also made a substantial contribution to the university’s administration during his career, serving as Postgraduate Coordinator in both the Mathematics Department and then the School of Physical Sciences. He has chaired the Faculty Promotions Subcommittee and served as Head of Mathematics from 2004-2006.

Professor Bracken retired in December 2009 but plans to remain active with the School and to continue to contribute to research in mathematical physics.
