Nobel Award-winning scientist Professor Peter Doherty will be among successful UQ alumni returning to the University in its Centenary year.
Professor Doherty will be the special guest speaker at the Emmanuel College Medical Dinner at Customs House on June 4, while 2010 Rhodes Scholar and former Indooroopilly State High School captain Jack Fuller will address the college’s Convocation Dinner on February 21.
Emmanuel College Principal Stewart Gill said both men promised to be inspirational speakers.
“Jack Fuller has recently been granted a Rhodes Scholarship to study a Master of Philosophy in International Relations at Oxford,” Professor Gill said.
“Jack experienced and made the most of university life at Trinity College in Melbourne so I think he will be an inspiration to our first-year students who are just beginning a new and exciting phase of their lives.”
Professor Doherty is one of only 11 Australian Nobel Laureates, and received the award in 1996 for his work discovering how the immune system recognises virus-infected cells.
He was named the 1997 Australian of the Year and in 2007 he was declared a member of Australia's 100 Living National Treasures.
“Having grown up in Brisbane and attended The University of Queensland, Peter Doherty is returning to his roots in what is the University’s Centenary year,” Professor Gill said.
In an interesting coincidence, both Professor Doherty and Mr Fuller are Indooroopilly State High School alumni.
