The University of Queensland will support students or staff whose friends or family may be affected by this week's Chilean earthquake or Pacific tsunami.

On February 27, an earthquake measuring 8.8 magnitude occurred around 300km south of Santiago, the Chilean capital, centred on the town of Concepción.

Chile is in an active volcano and earthquake area. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade advises travellers to reconsider their need to travel to Chile at this time due to earthquake damage.

The University of Queensland expresses its concern and sympathy for all of those affected by the recent events.

“UQ has many friends, colleagues and collaborators in Chilean universities, as well as in the public and private sectors,” UQ Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research and International) Professor Alan Lawson said.

“The University is offering support to all Chilean and other Latin American students who are currently enrolled at the University and at the Institute of Continuing & TESOL Education, as well as members of staff whose families, friends and colleagues may have been affected.

“The University is working to contact all UQ staff and students who are in Chile or have travel arrangements for the region.”

Students needing support can contact Student Services on 3365 1704.

Free counselling is available to staff through UQ's Employee Assistance Program provider, Davidson Trahaire Corpsych (DTC) telephone 1300 360 364.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade advises that if you have concerns for the welfare of Australian family and friends in Chile or other affected regions, you should first attempt to contact them directly.

If you are unable to contact them and still hold concerns for their welfare, you should call the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade's 24-hour Consular Emergency Centre on 1300 555 135 (within Australia) or +61 2 6261 3305 (outside of Australia).
