High Court Justice Susan Kiefel and acclaimed poet Professor Emeritus Thomas Shapcott AO are among seven recipients of University of Queensland honorary doctorates this year.

The honorary doctorate awards, based on factors including community service, career distinction and contribution to the University, will be presented as part of UQ’s main annual graduation ceremonies between Tuesday, December 8, and Friday, December 18, this year.

Also among the 10 is maverick Sydney art dealer Ray Hughes who will receive a Doctorate of the University honoris causa at a Faculty of Arts and Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences graduation ceremony in the UQ Centre at the St Lucia campus from 2pm on Monday, December 14. Justice Kiefel will receive a Doctorate of Laws honoris causa at a Business, Economics and Law graduation ceremony in the UQ Centre at the St Lucia campus from 2pm on Tuesday, December 8. She will also be the guest speaker at this ceremony. Click here for citation.

Professor Emeritus Shapcott will receive a Doctorate of Letters honoris causa at an Arts and Social and Behavioural Sciences graduation ceremony from 4pm on Wednesday, December 9, at UQ’s Ipswich campus. Click here for citation.

• Banker and business woman Dr Helen Nugent AO, who will receive a Doctorate of Business honoris causa at a Business, Economics and Law graduation ceremony held from 6pm on Tuesday, December 8. She will also be the guest speaker for this ceremony. Click here for citation.

• Orchestrator of the international expansion of UQ’s acclaimed Triple P – Positive Parenting Program – Des McWilliam, will receive a Doctorate of the University honoris causa at an Arts and Social and Behavioural Sciences graduation ceremony from 6pm on Monday, December 14, in the UQ Centre at the St Lucia campus. • Champion for animal health John Stewart AM will be presented with a Doctorate of Veterinary Science honoris causa at a Faculty of Natural Resources, Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences graduation ceremony from 11am on Wednesday, December 16, in the UQ Centre at the St Lucia campus. • Mr Nick Stump with his more than 40 years of experience in the mining industry both in Australia and abroad, will receive a Doctorate of Engineering honoris causa at a Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and Information Technology graduation ceremony held from 2pm on Friday, December 18. Mr Stump was Chief Executive of MIM Holdings Ltd for six years, before retiring in 2001. Click here for citation.
