UQ exercise scientist Dr Tim Henwood, who focuses on improving strength in older people, has organised two events aimed at baby boomers and the older adult.

Supported by the the ARC/NHMRC Research Network in Ageing Well, a cocktail party will be held on September 24 at LifeTec Queensland, Newmarket, and a Positive Ageing Journey Symposium on September 25 at the Queensland Turf Club.

The cocktail party will feature interactive demonstrations to highlight the effectiveness of assistive technology as an integral component of prolonged independent living, as well as showcasing the Queensland Smart Home Initiative’s interactive demonstrator centre.

The Symposium is an educational event with a primary target market of adults looking to extend the length and quality of their later lives.

Dr Henwood said a broad range of topics would be presented on the day, with highlights including talks about financial management, meeting the Australian physical activity guidelines, travel and effective grandparenting.

“This is the first event of its kind to be held in Brisbane, and will offer attendees a range of information about positive and successful ageing all under the one roof,” Dr Henwood said.

“In addition to the large range of topics presenting constructive advice about later life health, wealth and wellbeing, the symposium also offers trade displays and demonstrations.

“All topics will presented by experts in the field and keynote presentations given by local celebrates such as Ian Maurice from 4BC, John Hawkins from Hawkins Garden Centre and Glen Barratt from Restaurant 2.

“All this, and a chef prepared lunch, morning and afternoon tea for $20 for seniors card holders.”
