Her Excellency Ms Penelope Wensley AO, Governor of Queensland, became the first woman to deliver the annual Dr David Williams Lecture at King’s College on August 4.

Speaking of her many personal experiences as a diplomat throughout the world, Her Excellency addressed more than 250 guests including dignitaries from the University community and the Chief Justice of Queensland and Patron of the King’s College Foundation the Hon Paul de Jersey AC.

The address entitled “In Pursuit of Happiness” touched on a number of key global and humanitarian issues and Ms Wensley’s experience of college life when she resided at The Women’s College while studying at The University of Queensland.

The President of the King’s College Council, The Hon Justice Martin Daubney, also presented Ms Wensley with an Honorary Fellowship of King’s College.

The lecture, which was first delivered by Sir Zelman Cowan in 1995, honours a benefactor, the late Dr David Williams, a Welshman who entered King’s College in 1934.

Dr Williams studied at The University of Queensland and was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree with First Class Honours in 1955 and Master of Arts in 1957.

An active member of King’s College in all aspects, Dr Williams served on the College Council and was for more than twenty years President of the King’s Old Collegians Association. He passed away in October 1994.
