The graduating law class at UQ has elected a champion mooter and current associate to a High Court Justice as the student valedictorian for a UQ July graduation ceremony next week.

Ms Belinda McRae will be the valedictorian for the Wednesday, July 22, 6pm ceremony at the UQ Centre, St Lucia, with her selection approved by the University’s TC Beirne School of Law.

She will be graduating with a BA/LLB, with first class honours in Law, and majors in French and International Relations in her Arts degree at the ceremony for commerce and law students.

Ms McRae has enjoyed an active student career, which culminated in her role as President of the University of Queensland Law Society Inc in 2006.

"During my time at university, I sought to capitalise on the many opportunities available to me, particularly mooting, and I am very grateful for the way in which these endeavours inspired my current career direction," she said.

She represented Australia as a member of the 2006/2007 Jessup Moot team that reached the semi-finals in Washington DC and also as a member of the 2005/2006 International Humanitarian Law Moot team that won the Asia-Pacific Red Cross competition in Hong Kong. Moots are types of simulated court proceedings.

During her studies, Ms McRae also undertook two student exchanges in France and Denmark in 2008.

She is currently an Associate to the Hon Justice J D Heydon AC, Justice of the High Court of Australia in Canberra.

In 2011 she will begin a traineeship at international law firm Linklaters LLP in London.
