UQ’s School of Journalism and Communication (SJC) is working with news website brisbanetimes.com.au on a range of innovative activities for students and alumni.
The relationship with the company is already strong with a number of recent UQ graduates employed as reporters at brisbanetimes.com.au.
During March, secondary schools were invited to participate in the inaugural Citizen Journalism Short Video Competition. The competition called for year 12 students with an interest in journalism and visual communication to produce a three minute film carrying a message or social comment under the theme “Green”.
All entries were showcased on the brisbanetimes.com.au website with the winning entries determined through a people’s choice online vote and a judging panel.
The company donated a Canon video camera, valued at $900, to each team enabling the students to produce films using state-of-the-art equipment and add to their school’s resources.
SJC staff also held workshops with each team, equipping students with the necessary skills to record and edit their films.
The Gap State High School was named the People’s Choice winner, while St Joseph’s Gregory Terrace and Christian Outreach College placed first and second respectively with the judges.
Kelvin Grove State High School and St Joseph's College Gregory Terrace were also highly commended for their entries.
Brisbane Times marketing manager Karl Sikora said the partnership was mutually beneficial and he looked forward to working with the University on a number of projects in the future.
Also in March, the company also supported a retrospective symposium on the 20th anniversary of the Fitzgerald Inquiry attended by more than 200 current students and alumni. All School of Journalism and Communication alumni will receive a DVD of the event shortly.
