The inaugural University of Queensland Endowment Fund (UQef) scholarship recipients were given the opportunity to meet benefactors at a special morning tea on May 5 at the Sir Llew Edwards Building, St Lucia Campus.
The UQef was established in 2007 and supports academic initiatives such as scholarships, named professorial chairs and specific research programs in areas of defined need.
The initial philanthropic support from the fund includes scholarships totalling $500,000 for PhD and Honours level research in cultural history, new media studies, peace studies, conflict resolution and social aspects of natural resource management and sustainability.
UQ graduates and Wotif.com founders Graeme Wood and Andrew Brice last year pledged a mix of cash and shares valued at $18 million to establish the UQef.
Mr Wood, a Bachelor of Economics and Master of Information Systems graduate, and Mr Brice, a Bachelor of Commerce graduate, founded Wotif.com in 2000.
UQ Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Michael Keniger said the morning tea was a great opportunity for students to thank the UQef benefactors in person.
“The prestigious scholarship program will over time create a rich legacy of research projects benefiting society at large,” Professor Keniger said.
“UQ thanks our benefactors for their generous support which will help provide many students with the resources to achieve their academic goals.”
