Want to have fun, meet new people and volunteer all at the same time?

If your answer is yes, then the UQ Bridge is for you!

The Bridge is an organisation formed and led by students aiming to promote and organise valuable volunteer experiences for UQ staff, students and anyone else interested in helping the community.

With over 200 members and volunteer partnerships with over 20 organisations, members can find a volunteering project to suit.

President of the Bridge, John O'Bryen, said the best thing about being part of the Bridge was working with like-minded, motivated students.

"I have formed many meaningful friendships through it. Volunteering at the RSPCA during the summer holidays was also a milestone for me," he said.

"To join the Bridge, a person needs to meet a member of our executive, either at our office or at one of our events.

"Membership costs $5 – not a bad deal considering what we have to offer.

"Bridge members are presented with a smorgasbord of volunteer positions for them to choose from, as well as discounts."

Mr O’Bryen said the organisation's fundraisers planned for the near future included barbecues, a trivia night, and a simplicity ball.

"All profits end up going to a charity," he said.

Late last year, the Bridge raised $2200 from various activities, and donated it to The McIntyre Centre in Pinjarra Hills.

Academic staff and businesses can also get involved in the Bridge.

"We are currently looking for more academic research positions for our volunteers, and would appreciate any offers from UQ staff. Also, we are looking for businesses to sponsor future publicity for the Bridge," Mr O’Bryen said.

Non-members can also participate. On May 26 the Bridge will set up a sausage sizzle near the main refectory at the St Lucia campus.

There will also be a Trivia Night on Saturday May 30 at the Western Districts Community & Sporting Club, 55 Queenscroft St, Chelmer from 6.30 pm.

Tickets for the Trivia Night cost $5 for UQ Bridge members and $6 for non-members and are available from the UQ Bridge office, or at the door.

See the website for more information on joining the organisation or about upcoming events.
