A UQ student passionate about forging a career in the tourism industry has continued to excel in his studies thanks to an international scholarship.

Bernard Tan from Singapore successfully applied to receive an International Centre of Excellence in Tourism & Hospitality Education (THE-ICE) International Scholarship of Excellence to study at UQ’s School of Tourism, a founding member of THE-ICE.

Mr Tan said he was determined to embark on an overseas education and was interested in studying tourism management in Australia at an elite level.

“However, I found it difficult to finance an overseas degree,” he said.

“That was when I found the THE-ICE website on the Internet and realised that it was one of the preciously few scholarship opportunities in this area.”

School of Tourism Undergradate Coordinator Dr Noreen Breakey said Mr Tan’s application stood out for its academic rigour and commitment to excellence.

Mr Tan has successfully applied to attend the 2009 Harvard Project for Asian and International Relations (HPAIR) Business Conference in Tokyo in August, and will represent UQ as a delegate.

Mr Tan commenced studies at the University of Queensland in Semester 2, 2007. He maintains an outstanding grade point average and is the recipient of several Dean’s Commendations.

THE-ICE encourages, promotes and accredits excellence in tourism and hospitality education and assists international students who wish to study at THE-ICE member institutions.
