The UQ Rugby Club will play its first home game of the 2009 season in style when it hosts the Red Heavies Family Day on Saturday, April 4.
While University will be eager to secure a critical victory over local rivals GPS at St Lucia, there will be just as much action off the field with a variety of activities planned for the day.
There will be rides, face painting, giveaways and plenty of games that will keep the kids entertained, while adults can sit back and enjoy a sausage sizzle and some fantastic rugby.
The Red Heavies have showed promising signs in their pre-season State Cup matches and are now concentrating on transferring that form into the season proper.
UQ Club Captain Daniel Purcell said the first home game of the year was always a highlight of the season.
“We’re really looking forward to getting plenty of support behind us for what is sure to be a big clash against GPS,” Mr Purcell said.
“We’ve got a new coach, a number of fresh faces plus some older heads who will take to the field this season.”
Mr Purcell said there were several strong younger players rising through the ranks this year, with exciting prospects including Jono Lance, Ian Prior, Luke Morahan, Mark Swanepoel, David Burns and Mitch Wade.
“The club is looking to start the season strong and get a couple of wins under the belt and there’s no better way of doing that than beating GPS at home in front of a big, vocal crowd," he said.
Entertainment will kick-off adjacent to Field 5A, Sir William Macgregor Drive at 1.00pm, with students encouraged to bring identification cards to receive special rates on food and drinks at the clubhouse.
