Creativity and an ability to think “outside the square” were the hallmarks of the winning team of the recent Holiday Inn Hotel Technology Competition.
Established in 2006, the event encourages the University of Queensland’s School of Tourism students studying Hotel Technology Systems to apply their knowledge to real-world applications.
Student “consultant” groups examine and deliver a proposal on hotel technology systems to senior Holiday Inn management and UQ academics for the fictitious “Holiday Inn Hotel Virtuoso” in Brisbane.
“The Technology Competition is another example of the proactive role the school takes in implementing creative teaching initiatives and engaging with industry for the benefit of our students,” said co-organiser Dr Noel Scott.
Areas of technology explored by participants include front office and reservations, human resource management and catering and banquet systems.
The winning group, “Future Intelligence”, were one of three top performing groups selected to present at the Holiday Inn event in front of a judging panel comprising Holiday Inn Brisbane General Manager Mr Raymond Faulkner, Holiday Inn Information Technology Manager Duncan Stevens and Dr Scott.
In addition to the judging panel, the University engages the local community by inviting secondary schools with a strong tourism and hospitality curriculum to attend the presentations.
