UQ graduate Tim Emery is set to carve up the beef industry after being awarded a 12-month scholarship with Australia’s largest beef cattle company, AAco.

The Bachelor of Agricultural Science student will join other students graduating from the Faculty of Natural Resources, Agriculture and Veterinary Science in December.

“During this period I will be circulating within the different sectors of the company which will enable me to gain a better understanding of the whole supply chain,” Mr Emery said.

As part of the UQ program, Mr Emery completed an internship at Swan’s Lagoon Beef Cattle Research Station, which gave him the opportunity to apply his theoretical knowledge to practical situations, and develop hands-on skills that are transferable to his new position.

“After the internship I felt the desire to learn everything there is to know about the beef industry,” he said.

“I contacted people I had met during my internship to organise work experience with DPI&F and CSIRO and on top of that I attended beef forums and educational workshops.”

Mr Emery, along with his fellow students, helped form the Crop, Animal, Land and Food Sciences (CALFS) committee.

The committee organised an industry dinner on September 19, 2008 which was well attended by students, staff and industry representatives and provided an opportunity for collaboration amongst key players in the agricultural industry.

“These opportunities have helped me to make valuable contacts but have also helped to build the foundation of life long friendships,” Mr Emery said.

“The staff at The University of Queensland are knowledgeable and industry leaders in their fields and I am privileged to have been taught by them.”
