The University has been advised that Brisbane’s CityCat and ferry fleet will operate at restricted levels tomorrow.

The Lord Mayor Campbell Newman said today it had been deemed safe to restore limited operations.

The fleet stopped running at 6pm Friday due to a large amount of debris caused by flooding to the west of Brisbane, which could cause a safety hazard for the vessels.

Cr Newman said the first CityCat services would begin tomorrow morning, as per the usual timetable. However, they will have their top speed reduced from 25 to 15 knots.

CityCats and ferries will not run at night until further notice, with the last services tomorrow will leave Riverside at 6pm tomorrow.

“With the amount of debris in the river over the weekend, I am glad we decided to stop operations because there was an enormous amount of material out there,” Cr Newman said.

“We’ve today been speaking with Maritime Safety Queensland, the harbour master and the skippers of the vessels and we’re comfortable running below speed in daylight hours.”

The Lord Mayor said the situation would continue to be monitored and full services would be restored as soon as the threat of debris has passed.

“It’s not clear what sort of impact this reduced service will have, but luckily we’ve just put our 13th CityCat in the water to boost capacity,” he said.

“Although we have that extra capacity, we’d expect there to be less services during the day, however peak hour frequency will remain relatively unchanged.

“I am sorry if this causes an inconvenience for anybody, but the safety of our passengers has to be our number one priority.”
