Bachelor of Agricultural Science students can now take their interest in crops, forestry and horticulture to the Northern Territory.
Northern Territory Department of Regional Development, Primary Industry, Fisheries and Resources (DRDPIFR) is offering internships to third and fourth-year undergraduates and honours students studying agribusiness, agriculture, horticulture and forestry.
The Crops, Forestry and Horticulture Division provides applied research, development and extension services to facilitate plant industry-based development in the Northern Territory.
Internships are available in Darwin, Katherine and Alice Springs and the program is designed to complement the student’s area of interest and university studies.
Ash Cooper, a University of Queensland pastoral student who is completing an internship in Katherine, said the opportunity had increased his understanding of practices in a new and exciting environment.
“I have had the opportunity to work with some of Australia’s leading research scientists and have also travelled extensively throughout the Northern Territory,” Mr Cooper said.
“This has given me the opportunity to network with station managers and owners as well as see many of the different landscapes and wildlife of the Northern Territory.
“The internship has laid the foundations upon which I will begin to build a career once I graduate from university. I believe that partaking in the internship in a region other than one close to south-east Queensland will set me apart from other graduates in terms of industry experience.”
Mr Cooper receives support on his internship from research station staff and his academic supervisor, Dr Mark Hohenhaus.
The placement program offers financial support to assist with accommodation and living expenses, along with reimbursement of travel expenses to and from the Northern Territory.
