A mooting team from the University of Queensland’s TC Beirne School of Law has won the 9th annual International Maritime Law Arbitration Mooting competition, held recently in the Federal Court of Australia in Perth.

The UQ team, sponsored by Brisbane Marine Pilots, competed against 16 other groups from around the world, taking out the title for the fourth time since 2002.

The competition focuses not only on the law governing the international carriage of goods by sea but also on the increasingly important law of international commercial arbitration.

Professor Sarah Derrington, Director of UQ’s Marine and Shipping Law Unit said the results are a testimony to the strong research and advocacy skills of the students involved.

“The students worked very hard in preparing for the competition and their successes are well deserved,” she said.

The TC Beirne School of Law has a strong reputation in mooting, having successfully participated in and won a number of prestigious competitions including the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, the Red Cross International Humanitarian Law Moot Competition and the Asia Pacific finals of the Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot.

The University of Queensland will host the International Maritime Law Arbitration Mooting competition next year.
