Information on tertiary study options for Townsville students will be close at hand when representatives from The University of Queensland visit next week.

UQ Student Recruitment Manager Jessica Gallagher said the annual trip coincides with the Townsvillle Careers Market and aims to ensure regional students and their parents have access to information on programs, scholarships and accommodation options at UQ.

“At UQ, we have large numbers of students from north Queensland, many of whom are moving away from home for the first time,” Ms Gallagher said.

“The University offers on and off-campus accommodation options and has the services, facilities and support needed to ensure a smooth transition from high school to university.”

UQ offers the second largest number of Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarships (CAS) in the country, which are open to all students from regional areas who may be experiencing financial hardship and are worth over $4000 each year.

“From 2009, the University will also offer 275 new academic scholarships to be awarded to current year 12 students commencing study at UQ,” Ms Gallagher said.

Former Townsville Grammar School student, Roxanne Niveri, now a first-year UQ Bachelor of Arts (Japanese) and Bachelor of International Hotel and Tourism Management student and resident of International House, said it was important to get involved in all aspects of university life.

“I chose to study at UQ because it specialises in what I wanted to study, not to mention its well-known reputation,” Ms Niveri said.

“Uni is about more than just study. I have joined the Wasabi (Japanese) Club, play college hockey and attend fitness classes.

“At the start of the year, I honestly didn’t know what to expect from UQ and uni life but already I know that I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else for my tertiary education.”

Having won a scholarship to go on exchange to Townsville’s Japanese sister city, Iwaki, after year 12, Ms Niveri said the UQ Abroad Program was also appealing.

“Travelling to Japan after school was an amazing experience and I want to broaden my horizons further by studying overseas as part of my degree,” she said.

The UQ Student Recruitment Team will visit schools in Townsville on Thursday 7th and Friday 8th August before being joined by representatives from the University’s Faculties, Residential Colleges and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies Unit at the Townsville Careers Market on Monday, August 11.
