Twenty-two of Australia's brightest students have been awarded prestigious University of Queensland (UQ) Dean's Excellence Scholarships.

The Scholarships, which are awarded by UQ’s Engineering, Physical Sciences and Engineering (EPSA) Faculty, are aimed at encouraging and supporting talented students to engage in careers in engineering, physical sciences, environmental management, planning and architecture.

Principally based on academic merit, the Scholarships are awarded to students who have completed their secondary studies with outstanding academic results.

UQ EPSA Dean Professor Stephen Walker said the scholarships rewarded top students for their achievements to date, providing ongoing assistance to help them focus on their chosen programs and future careers.

This year, 17 of the Scholarships are worth $5000 per annum and in addition to these, the Queensland Resources Council (QRC) joined with UQ to offer an additional five scholarships at double the value, worth $10,000 per year for the duration of a four-year engineering degree.

The QRC is the first industry partner in these prestigious UQ Dean's Excellence scholarships. It is the peak representative body for minerals and energy sector companies in Queensland.

"The QRC is proud to assist such high-quality students at the starting point of their careers in the resources sector, which has so much to offer young people," the QRC Chief Executive Michael Roche said.

"The students themselves tell us that the scholarships offer so much more than just money. They bring with them opportunities to create lasting relationships with people in resources sector companies and build a profile within the sector from their very first year at university.’ Said .

The recipients for the Scholarships came from schools across Queensland: Ipswich Grammar School, Brisbane Grammar School, Brisbane Girls Grammar School, John Paul College, Somerville House, Brisbane Boy’s College, Moreton Bay College, Kelvin Grove State High School, Tullawong State High School, Emmaus College, Indooroopilly State High School, Coomera Anglican College, Kenmore State High School, Gladstone State High School, Sandgate District State High School, Stanthorpe State High School and Mackay North State High School.
