Outstanding researchers and their achievements will be celebrated next week at The University of Queensland.
UQ’s Research Week 2007 (September 17-21) will raise awareness of current UQ research amongst the university community, the general public, industry and government.
A feature will be the 9th annual UQ Foundation Research Excellence Awards (Brisbane Customs House, 5.30pm Tuesday, September 18), which will provide awards worth more than $500,000 to researchers who have demonstrated excellence and leadership potential. In addition, a total of $30,000 will be awarded under the 8th annual Awards for Excellence in Research Higher Degree Supervision, to recognise the vital job of supervising the next generation of researchers.
The new CEO of the Australian Research Council, Professor Margaret Sheil, will address the awards event, and some of the winners will present overviews of their work at the UQ Research Week Industry Dinner (Customs House, September 20).
Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Siddle said the awards were funded by the UQ Foundation and the University, and were part of a range of UQ initiatives designed to foster exciting research projects.
“UQ is proud of its record of achievement in research and research training and this week is a highlight in the University calendar,” he said.
“These achievements can be attributed in large measure to the talent, creativity and dedication of our staff and to the fact that there is a shared vision and shared aspirations throughout the University's community.”
Another highlight of the week will be the inaugural UQ Federation Fellows Public Lecture (Customs House, 6.30pm-9pm Wednesday, September 19).
Environmental and media issues will be discussed at the free community event, with lectures from distinguished researchers, Professor Hugh Possingham and Professor Graeme Turner. ABC Radio National sports reporter and writer, Warwick Hadfield, will convene the forum, and free refreshments will follow.
The Postgraduate Advice Night (Customs House, 5pm-8pm Monday September 17) will cater for people who are keen to advance their qualifications and career opportunities, or to pursue an intellectual passion. This is also a free public event, where representatives from across UQ will be able to answer individual questions about postgraduate coursework and research programs.
Customs House is at 399 Queen Street, Brisbane.
