UQ scholarship holder Adam Carlton is determined to set the world alight next week when he competes in his first Triathlon World Championships in Hamburg, Germany.

At only 19 years of age Mr Carlton will race in the Elite Under 23 category, and while he admits this is a great honour he is not selling himself short in the biggest triathlon event of the year.

“I am very lucky to be chosen to represent Australia in the Elite Under 23, but in any competition you’ve got to back yourself, so I’m certainly going out there to win it,” Mr Carlton said.

The Bachelor of Applied Science student has every right to be confident after picking up bronze medals in two recent International Triathlon Union events against open fields.

“I feel as though I’m in better shape than I’ve ever been before,” he said.

Amazingly, he is one of five UQ club members competing for Australia in Germany.

Following a breakthrough victory in Canada in June this year, Emma Moffatt will join in-form UQ Blue recipient Annabel Luxford in the Women’s Open Elite race.

Both athletes have performed extremely well in the World Cup series this year and are considered among the top hopes to take out the title.

Matt Hopper of the UQ Triathlon club will compete in the Men’s Open Elite, whilst Clem Jones scholarship holder Joshua Amberger joins Mr Carlton in the Junior Elite competition.

Shaun Stephens, UQ SPORT Development Manager, is also headed to Hamburg as the Australian National Assistant Coach.
