2006 Australian of the Year and University of Queensland Professor Ian Frazer will share key career highlights that led to the development of a revolutionary cancer vaccine at a free public lecture at the UQ St Lucia campus on Saturday morning, September 8.

Professor Frazer’s lecture is titled “Health and medical research: a major driver for sustainable health in the 21st century”.

It will focus on the key aspects of his research career and discoveries, in conjunction with the late Dr Jian Zhou, that led to the development of a vaccine for cervical cancer known as Gardasil.™

The ABC’s “New Inventors” Bernie Hobbs will MC the lecture which is expected to attract more than 1000 people from Brisbane and surrounding regions.

It will be at the UQ Centre, Building 27A, Union Road, St Lucia at 10am.

The public lecture forms part of UQ’s School of Biomedical Science’s Biohorizons ’07 e-conference for students of Human Biology.

Professor Phil Poronnik of the School of Biomedical Sciences said the public lecture would bring students and the public together to share their interest in human biology.

“The e-conference gives members of the public an opportunity to see how the groundbreaking research we undertake at UQ can make a real difference to health challenges we face across the globe,” Professor Poronnik said.

The lecture program includes an open discussion and opportunity for the audience to have their questions answered by Professor Frazer and a panel of UQ students and staff. It will be followed by refreshments and a chance for students, staff and the public to exchange ideas.
