The University of Queensland Vice-Chancellor, Professor John Hay, AC, today congratulated the University community for its strong patronage of bus services in 2007.

"It's an outstanding result that 25 percent more people used buses to the St Lucia campus on the first day of semester this week than on the same day last year," he said.

"I commend staff, students and visitors for taking to heart initiatives to help reduce traffic congestion and minimize the number of vehicle trips to campus."

Professor Hay said he was proud that members of the University community were playing their part to reduce their environmental impact.

"The news of increased bus patronage comes in the same week that the University was commended by Brisbane City Council for its water savings of about 240 million litres in the past year," he said.

The Minister for Transport and Main Roads, Paul Lucas, yesterday announced that on the first day of semester one classes this week, buses to UQ carried more than 15,000 passengers.

About half of these travelled on the three new bus routes that use the Eleanor Schonell Bridge from Dutton Park to the St Lucia campus.

Professor Hay also congratulated the Queensland Government for responding quickly to feedback from staff and students to provide additional capacity to three new routes to the campus.

Mr Lucas yesterday announced that the Government would support an additional morning peak service from Monday (March 5) to operate on each of these routes.

They are routes 109, 169 and 209, to UQ Lakes station at St Lucia, near the Eleanor Schonell Bridge, departing the City, Eight Mile Plains and Carindale respectively at 7.05am.
