The Federal Tax Commissioner, Mr Michael D’Ascenzo, will be the guest speaker at the Australian Tax Teachers Association (ATTA) Conference in 2007.

The TC Beirne School of Law at The University of Queensland will host the conference.

Mr D’Ascenzo will speak on the topic of “Simplifying Tax Administration in a Complex World” at the conference, to be held from January 22 to 24 at Brisbane Customs House.

Conference organiser Dr Kerrie Sadiq said the simplification of the tax regime was a major issue for all those working in the area.

"Hearing the Commissioner’s view firsthand is a fantastic way to start off the conference,” Dr Sadiq said.

Prior to his appointment as Commissioner, Mr D’Ascenzo held the positions of Second Commissioner (Law) and Chief Tax Counsel.

In these positions he led improvements to the self-assessment system, worked to raise the standard of technical tax decisions and focused on the interpretation and implementation of tax laws, corporate planning, finance and governance.

Mr D’Ascenzo has chaired a number of internal committees and has been involved in numerous other high level Tax Office and external forums, including the National Tax Liaison Group and the Tax Office/Treasury Tax Policy Coordination Committee.

He also had responsibility for the Australian Valuation Office.
