University of Queensland Law School academic Dr David Morrison has created a roadmap for personal finance in his new book Personal Financial Planning that serves both as a text for students and a reference work for individuals and investment advisors.

The book is the first Australian edition of a best selling US text by Lawrence Gitman, Professor of Finance at San Diego University and Michael Joehnk Emeritus Professor of Finance at Arizona State University.

With a bankruptcy and taxation background both as lawyer and chartered accountant, Dr Morrison explores the world of finance in an interdisciplinary manner examining both the legal and financial aspects of the individual financial planning decision making process within the Australian financial marketplace.

“The work complements my current research interests around financial literacy and the consequences of debt,” Dr Morrison said.

“The book also enhances the practical aspects of Australian Research Council funded interdisciplinary research with UQ’s School of Social Work and Applied Human Sciences on the management of older people’s financial assets.”

Dr Morrison said Personal Financial Planning was one of the few books available that contained local and up to date information explaining the interaction of finance and law, placing both in the context of financial decision making.

Some of the topics in the 584-page book include the management of assets and credit, taxation and superannuation, investments and estate planning.

“The book is structured as a lifecycle from the beginning to the end of a person’s financial and life journey, showing the means that allow financial plans to be developed for and by the reader,” Dr Morrison said.

“It is written in an approachable style and all terms are defined, making it accessible for use by those outside the profession but with an interest in the area.”

The first print run is selling quickly and the book is available from Thomson Learning Australia or from bookstores for $99.
