University of Queensland staff and students are advised of changed local traffic conditions at the St Lucia campus commencing in early September.

Sir William MacGregor Drive will reopen to cars, pedestrians and cyclists on Saturday, September 2, after being partly closed since May due to works associated with construction of the bridge linking Dutton Park and St Lucia bridge.

The John Oxley Walking track will also reopen.

College Road will be permanently closed to cars between Thynne Road and Sir William MacGregor Drive, in the section closest to the Dutton Park ferry, from September 2.

Drivers travelling north along College Road will divert at Thynne Road back to Sir William MacGregor Drive.

Changes to College Road will permit the reclaiming of additional parkland for the enjoyment of staff, students and visitors. This section of College Road will also include a cycle way.

Construction of the bridge is on track for completion in time for first semester, 2007. Earlier this month the two bridge decks met for the first time, when a six-tonne piece of grillage was lifted into place in the centre of the construction.

This week the Lord Mayor, Councillor Campbell Newman, announced the name of the bridge as the Eleanor Schonell Bridge.

Dr Schonell (1902-1962) made an internationally recognised contribution to testing for dyslexia and was renowned for her generous and humane approach to life.

Her work with cerebral palsy children led to international recognition and she also contributed substantially to the education of children with intellectual disabilities. She is also remembered in the name, Eleanor Room, in the University Staff and Graduates Club.

Dr Schonell co-authored important works in educational psychology with her husband, the late Sir Fred Schonell (1900-1969), the University’s Foundation Professor of Education (1950) and first salaried Vice-Chancellor (1960-1969), who is remembered in the name of a main thoroughfare to the University, Sir Fred Schonell Drive.
