Dedication to their local show society and a lot of hard work has paid off for seven University of Queensland students who have been awarded Coca Cola Amatil Regional Scholarships.

The scholarships, presented in conjunction with the Australian Council of Agricultural Societies, are awarded to students studying agriculture at a tertiary level who demonstrate a commitment to regional Australia in addition to their involvement in their local show societies.

The seven University of Queensland students who received the awards were:

• Kelly Boorman, a Vet Science student from Gympie & District Show Society
• Anita McNamara, a Vet Science from Hughenden Show Society
• Karl Enchelmaier, an Applied Science student from Woodford Show Society
• Janet Harris, a Vet Science student from Pioneer Valley Show Society
• Louise Mollenhagen – a Diploma of Applied Science student from Caboolture Show Society
• Daniel Brown – an Agricultural Science student from Maleny Show Society
• Rachel Hoolihan, an Applied Science student from Longreach Show Society

“It is good to see large corporations such as Coca Cola Amatil encouraging young people to remain active within their home communities even though most of them spend a lot of time away from home during their studies,” Professor Roger Swift said.

Professor Swift is Executive Dean of UQ`s Faculty of Natural Resources, Agriculture and Veterinary Science.

“The need to encourage and reward young people in rural and regional communities has never been more important than now," he said.

"There is a growing need for qualified graduates and scientists in regional areas and we need to harness the potential our students to fulfil this need."

A total of 33 scholarships will be available Australia-wide for up to the next five years, thanks to CCA and the Australian Council of Agricultural Societies.

These scholarships of $2,000 provide financial assistance for the educational expenses student incur while studying tertiary education.
