One of Queensland’s sharpest legal minds, the Honorable Geoff Davies AO, will examine “the Vanishing Trial” at The University of Queensland this week.

Mr Davies, a retired judge who has had an exceptional national and international career, will be guest speaker at the TC Beirne School of Law Supporter Reception on Thursday (June 22).

Last year he headed the final Commission of Inquiry into Bundaberg Hospital.

His address on Thursday, “the Vanishing Trial”, will explore some consequences of declining rates of civil trial.

The Head of the TC Beirne School of Law, Professor Charles Rickett, said the reception would thank people who gave donations and support to the school and its programs.

“Geoff Davies is one of the TC Beirne School’s most distinguished graduates and is now an Adjunct Professor in the School,” Professor Rickett said.

“His career of more than 40 years has included service as: inaugural judge of the Court of Appeal of the Supreme Court of Queensland; Chairman of the Litigation Reform Commission; Queensland Solicitor-General; Queen’s Counsel; and President of the Queensland Bar Association and the Australian Bar Association.

“Internationally, he was a consultant to the Review of the Civil Justice System in England and Wales (The Woolf Report) and the Review of the Civil Justice System in Northern Ireland.

“The TC Beirne School is delighted that he has agreed to treat our friends and supporters to what will undoubtedly be a challenging and entertaining address about the "vanishing’ civil trial".

Mr Davies will speak at 6.35pm at the James and Mary Emelia Mayne Centre at UQ on Thursday, June 22.
