Women in the Ipswich region have made possible a new scholarship to be offered for the first time next year at the UQ Ipswich campus.

The Heather Bonner Memorial Scholarship will be launched at the UQ Ipswich campus on Thursday, October 20.

The Scholarship is an initiative of the Ipswich Women’s Development Fund, established by Member for Ipswich Rachel Nolan and the Ipswich Region Chamber of Commerce.

It has been supported by individuals and organisations including Cr Cheryl Bromage, Quota, Zonta and the Australian Institute of Office Professionals.

The co-operative body was established to promote the achievements of women in the Ipswich community.

It was established earlier this year with the intention of raising funds to establish an annual scholarship for a female student at the Ipswich Campus, named in honour of the late Heather Bonner.

Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Alan Rix welcomed the support from the Ipswich Women’s Development Fund, and its worthy contribution to the lives of female students at the Campus.

“Initiatives such as the Heather Bonner Memorial Scholarship demonstrate the Ipswich community’s enthusiasm, dedication and outreach to enhance the lives of others,” Professor Rix said.

“The Campus is very fortunate to receive such support and we extend our warmest thanks to all members of the Fund for their ongoing hard work and commitment in providing financial assistance for female students of the Ipswich Campus.

“It is initiatives such as these that make The University of Queensland proud and honoured to be a member of the Ipswich community.”

Fund members, supporters, staff and students will be invited to the launch, which will be held in the Internal Garden, Building 8 from 12pm.

Applications for the Heather Bonner Memorial Scholarship will open from mid-October 2005 and will be awarded in April 2006. The $5000 Scholarship will be awarded on an annual basis to a different student each year.

Applicants must be female students studying full or part-time at the Ipswich Campus and residents of the Ipswich region. Other selection criteria are available on www.uq.edu.au/ipswich
