Queensland Premier Peter Beattie is to reveal details of his life, leadership and politics at a free public event presented by The University of Queensland this week.

The Premier will join ABC Radio National presenter and author Sandy McCutcheon to discuss the concept of "Making a Difference", as part of the 2005 Brisbane Writers Festival.

The duo will appear at the Courier-Mail River Marquee on Brisbane’s Southbank at 12:15pm Thursday September 29. (Please see below for a full listing of other events to be presented by UQ.)

The University of Queensland is a major supporter of the annual Brisbane Writers Festival and is proud to be associated with the event.

The festival provides a unique platform in which to showcase UQ’s outstanding literary and creative scholars, including many acclaimed authors.

Below are just some of the staff members from UQ’s Faculty of Arts appearing at the 2005 Brisbane Writers Festival.

Dr Venero Armanno is Head of Creative Writing in the Faculty of Arts and an award-winning author and scriptwriter. He has published reviews and feature articles, short stories, young adult fiction, and seven adult fiction books including `Firehead` and the 2002 winner of the Queensland Premiers Prize for Best Australian Novel, ‘The Volcano’. His experience as a scriptwriter has led him to work with the producers of ‘Strictly Ballroom’ and ‘Looking for Alibrandi’ on adaptations of his own novels.

Professor Richard Fotheringham is the Executive Dean for the Faculty of Arts at The University of Queensland and published author of Australian drama books including ‘Sport in Australian Drama’ and ‘In Search of Steele Rudd’.

Ms Amanda Lohrey is a lecturer in the School of English, Media Studies and Art History and the winner of many literary awards for her fiction novels, including the multi-award winning ‘Camille’s Bread’. Ms Lohrey’s published work is also included in eleven Australian story collections.

Ms Kimberley Starr is the author of ‘The Kingdom Where Nobody Dies’ which was chosen as a novel for the 2005 ‘One Book One Brisbane’ campaign. Ms Starr’s book also won the ‘Queensland Premier’s Literary Award for Best Emerging Author’ and was shortlisted for the Kibble/Dobbie Literary Awards. Kimberley is a research student at The University of Queensland and is currently undertaking a Master of Philosophy (Creative Writing).

Ms Kim Wilkins is an Associate Lecturer in Creative Writing and a multiple award winning novelist of supernatural fiction. She had her first book (‘The Infernal’) published in 1997 when she was a third-year undergraduate student at UQ. In addition to a mystery series for young adults, she has since had six other acclaimed novels published, including the historical thriller `Rosa and the Veil of Gold`.

The Fryer Library is the branch of The University of Queensland Library responsible for special collections. It was established in 1927 to foster the study of Australian Literature and it supports scholarship and research through its extensive holdings.
