An award-winning former University of Queensland (UQ) student and academic will make a return to the St. Lucia campus as a guest speaker for a mid-year graduation ceremony tomorrow evening (6pm Wednesday July 20).
Ms Linda Apelt, Director-General of the new Department of Communities and Disability Services Queensland will address the gathering at the UQ Centre for the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences graduation ceremony.
Ms Apelt completed a Masters of Education at UQ’s St. Lucia campus, Brisbane in 1991.
This led to her being awarded with the Grassie and Basset prize for outstanding academic achievement in educational administration in the Faculty of Education at UQ.
In 2003 she was awarded the Centenary of Federation Medal for distinguished contribution to the public sector, before becoming an Adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences at UQ from 2003 until 2006.
Since then, Ms Apelt has held a number of senior executive positions in the Queensland Government, before being appointed to her current role in 2004.
She joins a group of notable guest speakers who will attend three separate graduation ceremonies taking place at the St. Lucia campus tomorrow.
UQ graduate Mr Geoff Harley, Partner in Charge of the Brisbane office of the Australian law firm Clayton Utz, will address students at the ceremony for students from the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law (2pm Wednesday 20 July).
Mr Harley attended Cromwell College where he played intercollegiate sport, was Editor of the college magazine and Secretary of the College Association. He graduated with a Bachelor of Laws in 1965.
Also addressing the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law graduands at the 11am ceremony is Mr Chris Burrell, Managing Director of Australian firm Burrell Stockbroking.
