Queensland Chief Scientist Emeritus Professor Peter Andrews, AO will launch an Australian-first advanced postgraduate mathematics program at UQ St Lucia Campus on Monday July 4.

Professor Andrews will officially open the inaugural three-week program in Room E215, Forgan Smith Building, at 9am.

Organised by UQ Mathematics in conjunction with the http://International Centre of Excellence for Education in Mathematics (ICE-EM), the Australian Graduate School in Mathematics has attracted students from around Australia and overseas.

School of Physical Sciences Mathematics Professor Mark Gould said students attending this intensive program could learn the equivalent of a semester long US university advanced mathematics course in just three weeks.

“American students routinely undertake intensive courses as part of their PhD but similar intensive maths programs have not been offered in Australia before.

“We are delighted with the response to our inaugural program. A total of 58 postgraduate students are attending not only from universities around Australia but also from the University of Hong Kong and from the Universities of Auckland and Otago in New Zealand.”

Professor Gould said internationally recognised mathematics researchers from world-class universities in London, California, Chicago, Colorado, Pennsylvania and Israel would be presenting lectures in Algebraic Structures, Dynamical Systems, and Stochastic Processes during the three week program.

The Australian Graduate School in Mathematics is a joint initiative between the University of Queensland and ICE-EM and will become an annual event.

ICE-EM is funded by the Australian government through the Department of Education, Science and Training and managed by the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute.
