Graduating this week from internships with some of the biggest names in the finance sector, five UQ Business School students have proved themselves in the market before they’ve even finished their studies.
The graduation was held at Axiss Australia’s Sydney offices.
The students have completed placements as part of the Axiss Australia Scholar Programme, which is sponsored by the likes of Credit Suisse First Boston, the Reserve Bank of Australia, and ABN AMRO.
Axiss Australia seeks to position Australia as a global financial services centre in the Asian time zone. It is a division of the Australian Government’s national inward investment agency Invest Australia.
UQ Business School student Hannah Malter of Maleny, Queensland was sponsored by ABN AMRO in 2004. She said the internship was a highly valuable and beneficial experience.
Fellow ABN AMRO intern Nicholas Miller said the experience gave him invaluable commercial experience and allowed him to build personal contacts in the competitive investment banking arena.
He said, “From the first moment I was propelled into live transactions with clients. The scholarship has enabled me to put my foot in the door of an exciting and dynamic career in banking.”
Graeme Leigh, Anusha Prasher, and David Nelson of UQ Business School were also awarded Axiss scholarships in 2004.
The Axiss Australia Scholar Programme matches exceptional finance and business students in their final year of an undergraduate or postgraduate degree with a sponsoring organisation for 10 to 14 weeks full-time work experience.
ABN AMRO Country Representative Angus James said he would commend the Programme to all financial services employers.
He said, “The Programme gives employers the opportunity to get to know the top graduates and to play a key role in influencing their career path and choice of employer.”
In 2004, ABN AMRO sponsored all five students from UQ Business School and will take on another three interns in 2005.
Seventeen students were selected to undertake the program in 2004. Successful applicants were drawn from Australian National University, Queensland University of Technology, University of Newcastle, University of New South Wales, University of Queensland Business School, and University of Sydney.
Six UQ Business School students have been selected to complete the program in 2005. They are Ilana Stringer, Peter McMahon, Anna Palmer, Kellie Brown, Joseph Wong, and Samuel Churchill.
