Former Justice of the High Court of Australia, the Honourable Mary Gaudron QC, will present the annual World Understanding and Peace public lecture at The University of Queensland this month.

Justice Gaudron will speak on The Rule of Law—its role in international governance in the Ivor Cribb Hall, International House, 5 Rock Street, St Lucia, at 7pm on Friday, September 17.

The lecture will be a precursor to the United Nations International Day of Peace on September 21.

Justice Gaudron was the first and youngest female judge appointed to the High Court of Australia. She served as a Justice from 1987 to 2003.

When she retired, Justice Gaudron was the most senior Justice on the High Court Bench. She has since joined the International Labor Organisation in Geneva.

International House first established the World Understanding and Peace lectures in 1967 and they have included such guest speakers as Archbishop Peter Hollingworth, Justice Michael Kirby, Labor frontbencher Kevin Rudd and Richard Woolcott AC.

Last year the speaker was Professor Kirpal Singh from the Singapore Management University.

Covering a range of globally topical issues, the lectures aim to promote awareness of world situations.

For further details about the lecture, which will conclude with a wine and cheese supper, contact June Kant at International House on (07) 3721 2471.
