University of Queensland Occupational Therapy researchers are seeking people aged 65 and over who are considering giving up driving or have recently done so.
They also require people of all ages to form a reference group to review new resources designed to help the transition involved in retiring from driving.
Volunteers for the first study should preferably live in Sherwood or surrounding suburbs and are required for a six-week (one-morning-a-week) program.
The study’s findings will help create programs to assist people adjust to driving cessation, an issue not effectively addressed at present.
Sessions will run for four hours per week (Monday mornings from 9.30am until 1.30pm) for six weeks beginning on October 11 at the Sherwood Neighbourhood Centre.
There will also be three interviews with each participant held over the period at a time and place of their choosing.
For the second study, people aged 65 years and over — both retired drivers and current drivers — and people of any age who have retired drivers aged 65 years and over as family members or who are caring for retired drivers 65 years or older are needed.
Volunteers will form part of a reference group to review soon-to-be-available resources for the general public about driving later in life.
The resources are designed to raise awareness about retiring from driving and will help researchers establish which resources are easiest to use for older people.
Volunteers will be required for 20 to 40 minutes to briefly look over the resources and then to be interviewed at a convenient time between August 26 and September 6.
