The "older generation" will be out to reverse bulging waistlines at the Beginner’s Triathlon at The University of Queensland`s St Lucia campus on Sunday, March 14.
More than half the participants in the Come ‘N’ Try triathlon are 30-plus and determined to contradict a recent report which showed Brisbane was the country’s most obese city.
Mia Mason, a 36-year- old mum from Manly will be taking her bike, complete with baby seat, down for the event.
Her goal is simple, :"just to do it without collapsing.”
The event is a no-frills, non-competitive race, so all are encouraged to bring down their stack hats and mountain bikes and take up the challenge.
The course consists of a 200m swim at the UQ Aquatic Centre, a 7km cycle loop course on the campus and a 2km run along the Brisbane River.
Experienced triathletes from the University will be on hand to assist competitors, help set up the transitions and answer any questions.
The growing interest in triathlon is not limited to elite sportspeople with more than 100,000 Australian competing annually.
Event coordinator Katie Obst said many found significant personal achievement and satisfaction in completing a triathlon, with huge numbers of people taking the challenge no matter what their age, ability or sporting background.
“The Come ‘N’ Try triathlon will be the perfect opportunity for beginners to try their hand at triathlon and have fun doing so in the non-threatening environment” said Ms Obst.
Major Sponsor Lorna Jane is donating prizes for the day and Freestyle is providing breakfast for all participants after the event.
Late race entry is available from 6am at the UQ Aquatic Centre.
