Bright young minds from 83 schools, including three from Singapore, are set to test their ingenuity and imaginations in the Tournament of Minds state finals.

The annual event will take place at the University of Queensland’s St Lucia campus on Sunday September 14.

Teams of seven students, aged between six and 16, will use their analytical, creative and team-work skills to meet Challenges in three categories: Maths Engineering, Language Literature, or Social Sciences.

Tournament of Minds (Qld) Incorporated state director Fiona Meyer said the event gave
children the opportunity to be “unashamedly excellent”.

“These young people are always so innovative in meeting their Challenges,” she said.

“They work so well within teams, and within time and budget constraints, that it gives me an incredible sense of optimism for the future.”

This year’s Tournament attracted 1332 teams from 605 schools in 15 regions.

University of Queensland Dean of Students Dr Lisa Gaffney said the University was pleased to be hosting the state final for the ninth time.

“The University is committed to developing Australia’s knowledge resource base and events such as the Tournament of Minds play an important role in guiding the development of young high achievers.”

The University`s Faculty of Engineering, Physical Sciences and Architecture is co-sponsoring the Maths Engineering problem with the Institution of Engineers.

The teams will be judged by a panel of educators, members of the scientific and commercial sectors, cultural organizations and representatives of the wider community.

The Tournament representative teams will be announced by Education Queensland Director-General Ken Smith at a presentation ceremony in the UQ Centre at 5pm.

Six teams will be selected to represent Queensland at the Australian finals in Darwin in October.
