The revenue potential of hydrogen-based energy and the latest developments in hydrogen research will be the focus of a workshop to be held in Brisbane later this month.
The workshop entitled, Hydrogen Opportunities for Clean Energy Delivery, will bring together speakers from government, industry and academia including the Queensland Minister for Innovation and Information Economy, Paul Lucas MP and the Environment Protection Agency executive director, Dr John Cole.
The University of Queensland’s (UQ) Nanomaterials Centre director, Professor Max Lu, said the workshop would be an important forum for the discussion of the hydrogen economy and its associated technology.
“We are at the forefront of hydrogen energy research with outstanding capabilities in enabling technologies such as separation and capture, hydrogen production and storage, and fuel cells,” Professor Lu said.
“Australia and Queensland in particular is well placed in the future hydrogen economy as it has abundant coal resources.
“If the technology is developed successfully, production of hydrogen from coal can be a zero-emission process while providing the world with cheap and clean electric energy for the next 100 to 200 years,” he said.
The workshop will focus on the hydrogen economy, research into fuel cells, the use of fossil fuels to produce hydrogen, industrial development and the technologies required to generate hydrogen.
It is being organised by UQ’s Nanomaterials Centre associate director, Dr Joe da Costa with the assistance of PhD students Brad Ladewig, Ben McLellan and Warren Hogarth. It will take place on August 28 at Customs House.
The major national and international companies participating include Johnson Matthey Fuel Cells (UK), Toyota, Rio Tinto, BP, BOC, Kandls Engineering, Ecos Consultants, Stanwell Corporation, Burns and Roe Worley, CSIRO and CCSD.
