The University of Queensland’s Physiotherapy Department needs volunteers aged between 18 and 45 to help conduct research into whiplash injury.

Physiotherapist and researcher Julia Treleaven is investigating the relationship between the common complaints of dizziness, unsteadiness and visual disturbances after whiplash injury, and measures of balance, eye movement and head position sense.

“The results of this research will add to the understanding of this complex injury, which will ultimately assist clinical physiotherapists in their management of whiplash.” Ms Treleaven said.

The study needs people, with and without dizziness, who have neck pain resulting from a motor vehicle accident in the last three years, but not in the last three months.

Subjects must be between 18 an 45 years of age, and be able to attend the Physiotherapy Department at the University’s St Lucia campus for one testing session of approximately 50 minutes.

“Three specific physical tests looking at postural control will be conducted during the session,” Ms Treleaven said. “ Volunteers will also be asked to complete questionnaires about their pain and dizziness symptoms.”
