The University of Queensland is aware that exchange students overseas may be worried about continuing their studies due to the outbreak of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) virus and/or the conflict in Iraq.
It is understandable that some students may be contemplating returning early from their studies. If that is the case, they will need to consider the implications of this step on their studies.
Each returning student’s case will be carefully considered and every effort will be made to transfer the student’s exchange course into an equivalent UQ course for the remainder of Semester One. Students should contact the relevant Faculty representative listed below for further clarification:
• Faculty of Arts: Cressida Bradley c.bradley@uq.edu.au
• Faculty of Biological and Chemical Sciences: Karl Ashton k.ashton@uq.edu.au
• Faculty of Business Economics Law: Frank Finn f.finn@bel.uq.edu.au
• Faculty of Health Sciences: Shirley Leuthner s.leuthner@uq.edu.au
• Faculty of Engineering Physical Sciences and Architecture: admin@epsa.uq.edu.au
• Faculty of Natural Resources and Veterinary Science: nravs.enquiries@uqg.uq.edu.au
• Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences: Kristy Kavanagh-Dowell
k.kavanagh@uq.edu.au
Students who may be feeling isolated can access counselling support. Students are asked to call 61 7 3365 1704 or email relax@uq.edu.au, and leave their names, telephone numbers, and the city and country in which they are staying. University staff will return all calls, thus ensuring that costs to students are kept to a minimum.
The University is continually monitoring information that is being provided by authoritative sources including the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs for travel for advice in specific countries. The World Health Organisation is providing specific advice on SARS.
We strongly recommend that all students who are currently overseas register with the nearest Australian diplomatic mission. Students who are returning to Australia should carefully reconfirm all flights prior to commencing their journeys as airlines are reducing services due to a decreased demand for international travel.
