Drought-affected Queensland children will leave their hometown worries behind when they holiday at The University of Queensland from January 17 as part of a statewide support program.
More than 300 children from drought-affected areas will converge on the St Lucia campus from January 17-21 as part of the inaugural Bush to Beach program, run in conjunction with McDonald’s Queensland, Rotary Clubs and Channel 10.
The cost-free Brisbane visit will be the first taste of life away from home for many of the children aged six to 16 – some of who will travel for up to 30 hours to join festivities.
Don Stalker, spokesperson for McDonald’s Queensland and Northern Territory owner/operators, said the Bush to Beach program would provide a rare opportunity for country kids to experience a holiday away from home.
“It’s imperative we not only recognise how tough our primary producers are doing it in Queensland’s heartland, but also actually try to do something to ease the burden, particularly on the children,” Mr Stalker said.
“By working with our Bush to Beach supporters to cover all transport, accommodation, meal and entertainment costs, we’re giving these country kids a holiday most parents can’t give them during the current drought which sees them busy working on the land to sustain their livelihood.”
UQ SPORT will host a welcome sports afternoon at the University from 2pm on Friday January 17, where children will join visiting Korean primary students in a unique cultural and sporting experience.
The sports afternoon will be held on the WEP Harris Oval on Sir William McGregor Drive.
During the five-day stay outings will include visits to Warner Bros Movie World, Sea World, Coolangatta Beach, a training session with the Brisbane Lions, a BBQ with the Brisbane Broncos, and a gala evening with country singer Troy Cassar-Daley.
Kim Guerin, Director for UQ SPORT at The University of Queensland, said UQ SPORT was pleased to be able to provide sporting facilities and activities on such a worthwhile trip.
“UQ SPORT is committed to providing participation opportunities and looks forward to holding activities for the large group of kids during this unique adventure,” said Ms Guerin.
“We are sure that the kids will be very happy and comfortable during their time on campus and will be able to be actively involved in a range of sporting activities they may not be offered at home.”
