A new Veterinary Science conference and meeting venue, funded partly by the estate of prominent UQ alumnus Dr Kathleen Marshall (nee Lambourne), has been officially opened.
The Kathleen Lambourne Building is located within the Seddon Building complex on UQ’s St Lucia campus. Dr Marshall’s estate contributed $100,000 to the $340,000 structure, with the remaining funding coming from other University bequests.
Speaking yesterday at the opening ceremony, former head of the UQ Veterinary School Emeritus Professor Keith Hughes said Dr Marshall was a champion of perceived deserving causes from saving the Bellevue Hotel through to helping musicians.
“But her greatest enthusiasm was reserved for her beloved veterinary school for which she participated in a plethora of fund-raising activities,” Professor Hughes said.
“Driving her ideology was a compassionate desire to improve the welfare of animals – she abhorred cruelty in any form.
“The Veterinary School is very grateful for Kathleen’s support.”
Dr Marshall graduated a Bachelor of Veterinary Science in 1968.
“Those of us who knew Kathleen were shocked four years ago to hear of her untimely death,” Professor Hughes said.
Executive Dean of the Faculty of Natural Resources, Agriculture and Veterinary Science Professor Roger Swift said the Kathleen Lambourne Building was a tremendous asset.
“Universities increasingly have to rely on bequests and donations to fill the gap created by cutbacks in government funding, and we greatly appreciate the contribution Kathleen Marshall has made to the teaching of Veterinary Science.”
