A bold new information era for staff and students at Brisbane’s Princess Alexandra Hospital will be heralded by the official opening of the Joint PA Hospital/University of Queensland Library today, Monday 29 October, at 5pm.

Queensland Health Minister The Hon Wendy Edmond MP and The University of Queensland Chancellor The Hon Sir Llewellyn Edwards AC will jointly open the new facility, which provides one of the state’s leading teaching hospitals with unprecedented access to world-class medical information.

“The physical library itself is a wonderful new facility for both PAH and UQ staff and students, with some 3000 books and 400 journal titles on hand, but the real bonus is access to UQ’s Cybrary – a 24-hour gateway to the world’s major health databases and e-journals,” explained University Librarian Janine Schmidt.

“We’ve come a long way from the modest little book collection of some 99 serial titles supplied to the PAH back in 1969.

“This library has truly grown from strength to strength and is now both a world-class resource for research and education and a fitting symbol of the strong relationship between PA Hospital and The University of Queensland.”

The newly fitted-out library now occupies 1100 sq m (or three times its previous size) within the new building at PA Hospital, and includes a multimedia training room and group study rooms.

UQ School of Medicine Southern Clinical Division Head Associate Professor Ian Hardie, member of the Joint PAH/UQ Library Management Committee, said the new library had been very well-received by staff and students.

“It has really become a focal point of activity and a central plank of the Division’s commitment to high quality health research, teaching and clinical service” Assoc Prof Hardie said.

The Hon Wendy Edmond and The Hon Sir Llewellyn Edwards will jointly open the Joint PA Hospital/UQ Library at 5pm today on the Ground Level of the PA Hospital. Media are welcome to attend.
