An important Australian archaeological site in Northern Greece will be discussed at a free University of Queensland illustrated public lecture on Friday, June 29.
Professor Alexander Cambitoglou AO will discuss findings at Torone, in Halkidiki, Northern Greece, a site excavated by an Australian team under his direction.
The lecture, entitled With Thucydides in our hands: The Australian Expedition to Torone 1975-2000, will be at Abel Smith Lecture Theatre, Campbell Road, St Lucia at 8pm.
The lecture marks the 20thth anniversary of the Australian Archaeological Institute at Athens and the 25th anniversary of the Australian expedition to Torone. It was originally delivered in the presence of the Governor-General Sir William Deane earlier this year.
Several University of Queensland students have been members of the Torone team, thanks to the generous support of the Greek community of Brisbane.
Professor Cambitoglou, who is also the excavator of Zagora on Andros, is an Emeritus Professor of Classical Archaeology at the University of Sydney and Director of The Australian Archaeological Institute at Athens.
The lecture is being held by the University in association with UQ's School of History, Philosophy, Religion and Classics; UQ's Department of Classics and Ancient History; and the Queensland Friends of the Australian Archaeological Institute at Athens.
